Where are the women?

One of the biggest issues we face with creative work - at least in the world of independent music - is the scarcity of women in the field. Like most fields, music is dominated by men. Women typically appear in only sensational popular music but when it comes to technical aspects of music, I often see that men are predominantly behind the scenes. This is reflected in my past work with Universiti Malaysia Sabah - men as the technical directors, organizers, and musicians for a jazz concert. I see women being boxed into a category - as a novelty - that is not only niche but also hardly accessible as collaborators. It was difficult for me to find women in the audio engineering department, for example. Therefore, my inclusion of women in what I do creatively is purposeful.

Trans women in music: The issue of the poor and the lack of presentation still eludes many . People like Teddy Geiger, Claire Michelle, Laura Jane Grace, Zhea Erose, and many more are doing amazing work but are still hardly noticeable. It is important to question the underlying issue of misogyny in music and pop culture because these mediums often shape the perspectives of the wider population in regards to how we all look at trans individuals.
